“Dream Lover” is a song written by American musician Bobby Darin. Recorded on March 5, 1959, and released as a single the following month, the song was produced by Ahmet Ertegun and Jerry Wexler and engineered by Tom Dowd. In addition to Darin’s vocals, the song features Neil Sedaka on piano.
During the recording process, Darin decided to expand on some chord changes he found on the piano, incorporating strings and voices into the arrangement. The single was released on Atco Records in the U.S. in 1959 and became a commercial success. It reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 for a week, No. 4 on Billboard’s Hot R&B Sides chart, and No. 5 in Canada. “Dream Lover” held the No. 1 spot on the UK’s New Musical Express chart for four weeks in July 1959. It also achieved success in other international charts, reaching No. 5 in Norway, No. 12 in Flanders, and No. 21 in Wallonia. The song’s popularity and Darin’s engaging performance contributed to its status as a multi-million seller.
