About The Song
“More Than I Can Say” is a song written by Sonny Curtis and Jerry Allison, former members of Buddy Holly’s band, the Crickets. They recorded the song in 1959, shortly after Buddy Holly’s death, and released it in 1960. The Crickets’ version of the song was the third single from their second release, “In Style with the Crickets.” The song was written in about an hour by Curtis and Allison, with the memorable “wo-wo yay-yay” hook left unfinished. Despite the unfinished hook, the single became a minor hit in the UK, entering the top 40 and peaking at 26.
The song has been notably performed by other artists, including Bobby Vee and Leo Sayer. Sonny Curtis considers “More Than I Can Say” to be one of his most enduring songs, noting the success that subsequent artists have had performing it.
