He endured legal battles over his name in Germany, financial trouble, public controversy, and a near-fatal plane failure in 1973 that refocused his world entirely on what mattered most: his family.
Through every triumph and trial, the heart of his existence remained his wife, Patricia Healey. The pair met in the early 1960s before fame arrived, marrying in 1964. For 56 years, Patricia was his constant anchor. In every concert and on every tour, Engelbert carried a prized, faded letter from her in his pocket. When Patricia was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease around 2007, Engelbert watched the love of his life slowly lose her memories. He curtailed his touring schedules to stay by her side until her passing in February 2021.
Even as a widower, Engelbert’s story did not end. Refusing to fade away, he continued to write daily journal entries as letters to Patricia and kept his promise to sing until his last breath. Surging back into public awareness after his classic A Man Without Love went viral on TikTok for Gen Z audiences, he launched The Celebration Tour and released the deeply personal song I Got You for his 90th birthday—a track written for Patricia decades prior.
